Recording essential waterways skills and techniques

Boat crews and one of the horses at the end of the dayBackground

This delightful film explores and records one of the few complete surviving stables from the era when all canal boats were horse drawn, a gemstone of our historic waterways.

For two days in October 2002 a group of canal enthusiasts recreated for the camera the atmosphere and practical reality of a working canal stable. With horses, harness and a beautifully restored narrow boat the daily work of this humble but essential building in Wheelock, Cheshire, was brought alive and commemorated for a new generation of canal boaters to enjoy.

Sight Seen Partnerships wish to thank British Waterways who own the building and their local staff who participated in both filming and administration, and successfully negotiated funding from the Countryside Agency. This film would not have been possible without the help of the Trent and Mersey Canal Society and The Boat Museum Society. Many thanks are due to them and to the residents of Wheelock who came forward with much practical help and valuable memories. Thanks also, to Sue Day and her patient and handsome horses, which did so much to illustrate the purpose and practicalities of this important building.
