Web Page Technical Notes

The pages have Netscape and HTML 3 extensions, so are best viewed with Netscape 3 or Internet Explorer 3 or later versions. An 800x600 display with 64K colours is preferred.

All pages should have a subtle background image resembling a light grey textured paper. Some early browsers will not display this. Inadequate colour depth will cause a speckly background, making text difficult to read.

To save loading time, images on main catalogue pages are kept as small as possible, JPEG for pictorial subjects, interlaced GIF89a for artwork. "Feature" pages, such as the Current Topic page, Work in Progress and Site Features have slightly larger pictures. HTML code is kept as short as possible by writing it by hand and not using any web authoring software!

All the photographic images used to illustrate tapes are taken direct from video. All are good quality, so If you see jaggies, your browser may not have decompressed the image correctly. If the images look speckly, your video card may be dithering strangely. Even the GIF images each have their own 256 colour pallette, so the video card needs to be able to display >>256 colours to cope with several GIFs at once. 8-bit colour is not enough! A sensible minimum is 64K (2^16 or 16 bitplanes).

Colour testThe colour square should contain fairly smooth gradations of hue and saturation, not just a few blobs of solid colours. It should not be speckly.

The word wrap may be odd if viewed at less than 800x600.
The steam engine logo, top left of this page should animate smoothly, but Netscape sometimes makes it jerky.

If you suspect you are getting poor quality pictures or backgrounds from your browser, try viewing this JPEG copy of the top left of the home page by itself with a different viewer, e.g. Lview...

The diagram summarises the main pages and links. As with other maps in these pages, it is clickable but the response will be faster with more recent browsers. (Netscape 2, Internet Explorer 3, etc.)
