Electric cabling

Can anyone give an approximate date for the introduction of various types of electric cable to try and date some work in an existing building. When was twin and earth cable introduced? Certainly in the 20's most domestic wiring was lead covered two core but what dates where the other types introduced?

Interesting topic. My previous but one home was built sometime between 1890 & 1910 and I found some flat lead covered two-core cable in it, still in use in the late 1980's in the lighting circuits. However, the 1968 Buck & Hickman catalogue still listed lead sheathed cable (single core, twin flat, and twin flat with ECC), so the cable may not have been too old. My parents house was built about 1940 and that had two-core rubber (VIR) insulated cables, with mostly round 5 amp two-pin sockets, spur circuits, contained in metal oval ducts in the wall plaster. I rewired the house with PVC insulated twin flat & ECC in the early 1970's, and with square 13 Amp sockets, on ring circuits. In those days green sleeving was used on the ECC (at one time the wire was left bare, then green sleeving, then it changed to yellow / green). My next house was also built in 1940 and that had round single-core cotton sleaved rubber cables, but they were contained in 1/2" O.D. dia metal conduit buried within the plaster. Possibly you may be able to track down dates of the cables more closely by looking at British Standards (www.bsi-global.com). You could also look at the wiring geometry of the circuits and the IEE wiring regulations, to see when changes such as earth wiring colour codes, ring circuits, square sockets, etc, came into use. I hope this helps.
